Breakfast Burrito: How to Make this McDonald’s Copycat Recipe

While I am not a huge fast food fan anymore (I have it less than once per year), I used to indulge more frequently. Especially when I was a kid and if that’s what the fam was getting, I guess that’s what I am having too. Back in the day, my dad was kind of a couponer, so if there was a coupon for Dunkin Donuts, that’s what we would get. But if we were lucky, and there was coupon for McDonald’s, so enter the breakfast burrito.

I know what you’re thinking, and yeah, I think the McDonald’s breakfast burrito cost like a dollar in the early to mid 90’s so why do you need a coupon? I can’t answer that, all I know is that I would reap the benefits of said coupon because the McDonald’s breakfast burrito from the golden era of McDonalds was the best. Unfortunately, they changed the recipe, but don’t worry. I got you with my copycat recipe that is bigger and better than the original.

If you’re not familiar with the McDonald’s breakfast burrito, let me enlighten you. It’s got fluffy scrambled eggs, little nuggets of sausage, cheese, maybe a couple of onions and peppers, and who could forget that spicy picante sauce. It’s pretty basic, but when it all comes together, it’s magical. Especially with that extra drizzle of hot sauce!

So next time you are looking for a breakfast that will keep you full until the lunch hour, try my breakfast burrito and let it take you back to the 1990’s!

This recipe makes 2 burritos, but it is easily doubled.

Ingredients:

2 burrito sized tortillas

2 sausages, diced

1/2 onion, diced

1 bell pepper, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

5 eggs

1 teaspoon of sour cream

1/2 teaspoon of each cumin and chili

2 slices of american cheese

salt and pepper to taste

Hot sauce of your choice to serve

Instructions:

  1. Begin by sauteing the sausage, onion, and pepper in a frying pan over medium high heat with a little olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper and stir occasionally.
  2. After about 5 minutes and the sausage is cooked and the onions are translucent. Add the garlic.
  3. Meanwhile, combine the eggs with sour cream, cumin, chili, and more salt and pepper. Beat to combine.
  4. If needed, add more oil to your frying pan and add the eggs to to scramble with the sausage, onion, and pepper. Push the eggs with a silicone spatula to evenly cook and prevent sticking.
  5. Now it is time to make the breakfast burrito. Take the tortilla and heat it up in the microwave for 10-15 seconds so it is pliable. Cut the american cheese into 2 triangles and line the cheese down the center of the tortilla. Top with the egg and sausage mixture, taking care not to over fill. Now roll it, fold over the sides, and continue rolling until that egg and sausage mixture is wrapped up in the tortilla. Cut it in half and enjoy with hot sauce.
