I am no pit master. I do not have secret sauce recipe. I’m just a lady, desperate to find some decent barbecue sauce in the Middle Eastern dessert. That was proving difficult and desperate times call for desperate measures, so I had to develop my own version of barbecue sauce.
Normally, I love to make a sauce, but honestly, I though the bottled versions at American grocery stores were doing a fine job. And usually, if I am using a store bought marinade for my chicken, I just need something quick and easy. But no such luck here.
Instead, I had to come up with a recipe for my homemade barbecue sauce that mimicked the bottled version but tasted fresh and dare I say, more versatile. This homemade barbecue sauce is a little different than your average and works very well as a pizza sauce for your barbecue chicken pizza or for a simple marinade for your barbecue meats. My barbecue sauce recipe only take about 20 minutes to make and it will last a couple weeks in an airtight jar in the fridge.
Make about 2 cups of sauce.
Tools:
You will need a food processor or immersion blender to smooth out the sauce.
Ingredients:
1 onion, diced
3 cloves of garlic, smashed
1 cup of ketchup
1/3 cup of water
2 tablespoons mustard
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon paprika
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon honey
Instructions:
- In a saucepan over medium-low heat, saute the onion in a little oil, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the water and ketchup and stir to combine. Simmer for another 5 minutes.
- Add the mustard, vinegar, worcestershire, chili powder, paprika, brown sugar, and honey and stir to combine. Simmer for another 10 minutes.
- Remove the barbecue sauce from the heat and allow to cool slightly before adding to a food processor and pulsing until smooth.
- Store in a jar for up to 2 weeks or use it up on your next recipe!
