Margherita Pizza with Crispy Sausage

Margherita Pizza with Crispy Sausage

I am not the biggest pizza fan. While tasty, I do not find it to be filling. For some reason it is like eating air. However, I find that making the crust homemade and then layering on fresh toppings makes a huge difference. It’s still delicious, but I actually get full eating my margherita pizza with sausage. By slice 1.5, I am pretty much done. I am not sure exactly why this is, but I would be willing to bet that the mass production of the pizza dough has something to do with it. And I think my homemade version is likely slightly healthier.

And while I love margherita pizza, sometimes it does feel a little boring. So on this version, I added a generous portion of smoked sausage that crisped up in the oven and voila a delicious margherita pizza with crispy sausage. This pizza has everything you could possibly want; a soft crust for your carbs, fresh tomato and basil for your vegetables, mozzarella cheese for some needed calcium, and sausage for a kick of protein.

This is also a fun one to make yourself because you get that extra creative freedom to really add whatever your heart desires. So next time you are craving pizza, give this combo a try!

Ingredients:

Pizza dough, store bought or homemade

1 heirloom tomato, thinly sliced

1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, gently torn

1 tablespoon of olive oil

3 smoked sausage links, cut into rounds. I used turkey sausage

2 cups of mozzarella cheese, shredded or torn if fresh

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425. Meanwhile, stretch the pizza dough over a pizza pan and gently massage with olive oil.
  2. Top the oiled crust with tomato slices and then cover evenly with cheese. Dot the sausage over the top and strategically place the basil around the pizza.
  3. Bake for 12- 15 minutes until the crust is crispy and the cheese is melted.
  4. Cut into 8 pieces and enjoy, hopefully with a beer or at the very least a coke!
