Steak with Shrimp and Brown Butter Chimichurri Sauce

Steak with Shrimp and Brown Butter Chimichurri Sauce

My steak with shrimp and brown butter chimichurri sauce is the perfect recipe for a date night in. And while I am not the hugest steak fan, the shrimp swimming in the brown butter chimichurri sauce is the perfect accompaniment to some crusty bread. I also paired this with a lightened up version of creamed spinach and paired it with a juicy malbec for the perfect meal.

If you are not familiar with chimichurri sauce, it is an Argentinian, herb based sauce with plenty of parsley, oregano, garlic, chili, and usually oil and vinegar. It has been used for ages as a sauce to grilled meats and pairs perfectly with steak. For my recipe, I am going to mix it up a little so that it is not only perfect steak sauce, but also the vessel for succulent shrimp for this turf and surf recipe.

In my version of chimichurri, yes I am using the parsley and oregano, but my fat component is going to be a nutty, brown butter perfect not only for the steak, but also the shrimp. And for the acid, instead of vinegar, I am using lemon juice which will really take this shrimp to the next level. The combination of my steak and shrimp with brown butter chimichurri is a winner. Definitely give this recipe a try for your next date night it!

Serves 2

Suggested Wine Pairing:

Sticking with Argentinian trend, a juicy malbec will enhance the bright flavors of the chimichurri sauce.

Tools:

I recommend grilling the steak, but any grill will do. A grill pan or an outdoor grill; both count!

Ingredients:

2 – 6 ounce New York Strip Fillets, or your favorite cut

12 shrimp, peeled and deveined

1/2 cup of parsley, chopped finely

1 tablespoon of oregano

2 cloves of garlic, minced

1 teaspoon of chili paste

Juice of 1/2 lemon

2 tablespoons of butter

Instructions:

  1. Allow the steaks to come to room temperature. Salt and pepper both sides of each fillet and rub on some olive oil.
  2. In a large frying pan over medium heat, add the butter and allow it to melt and bubble. Stir it occasionally, making sure it doesn’t burn.
  3. Meanwhile, preheat your grill. In a bowl, combine the parsley, oregano, garlic, chili paste, and lemon. Add salt and pepper to taste and stir to combine.
  4. Steak and shrimp cook quickly, so now it’s go time! Add the steak to the grill and grill 3-5 minutes each side. Allow the steak to rest for 2-3 minutes before serving.
  5. Meanwhile, add your shrimp to browning butter. Cook for 2 minutes and turn them over. Add the chimichurri sauce and allow it to heat up for another 2 minutes or until the shrimp is cooked through.
  6. To serve, top each steak with the shrimp and brown butter chimichurri sauce.
