If you were ever wondering what grocery shopping in the Middle East is like, I can tell you it’s pretty similar to the experience you have stateside. However, one thing you will notice right away is that there are no pork products. The second thing you will notice is that the stores are generally smaller and pre-packaged, ready made items are not as plentiful. For example, there may only be one or two choices for a packaged salad dressing and if you are looking for ready made guacamole, keep dreaming. The good news, is that you can find many of the necessary ingredients to make guacamole. The avocados are usually shipped in from this really interesting sustainable farm in Lebanon. Sometimes, they are hit or miss, but when I find a good batch, you better believe I maximize it!
Guacamole
Makes 2 cups
Tools:
I use a blender just to reduce time chopping ingredients, but you could also use a potato masher or even the back of a fork to have a more chunky consistency. I generally make this after my Pico because you don’t even need to wash the blender between recipes as it uses many similar ingredients.
Ingredients:
2 Hass Avocados, pitted and scooped from the skin
1/2 red onion, roughly chopped
1/2 Roma tomato, seeded and roughly chopped
2 cloves garlic
1-2 Thai red chilis (or jalapeno)
Juice from 1/2 lime
1 teaspoon of salt
Instructions:
- Add all ingredients to a blender and combine until smooth. Serve with chips, breakfast tachos, or fajitas. Cover unused portion in airtight container and with a pit and a lime to reduce oxidization.
